The Narragansett
1640 East 50th Street, Chicago Illinois
Architects: Leichenko
and Esser, 1928
The Narragansett is a 22-story concrete frame condominium
building with a brick, limestone and terra cotta facade in Chicago’s
Hyde Park neighborhood.
Klein and Hoffman, Inc. has served as the architect / engineer of
record for the building since 1992. Based on the original
investigation, which was completed early that year, a multi-phase
rehabilitation program was implemented to restore the building’s
exterior masonry walls and structural steel shelf angle
supports. Over the years, K&H has successfully completed
six phases of work, which have covered over 75% of the building
perimeter.
In addition, K&H restored the existing canopy at the south
entrance of the building. This included repair of the
structural steel framing elements and replacement of metal panels
located at the underside of the canopy.
The last phase is expected to be completed in 2007 and includes
the replacement of brick masonry and shelf angles on the west
elevation as well as extensive replacement and repair of the
polychromatic terra cotta spandrel panels on the south and east
elevations.
