The Gage Building
18-28 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago
Illinois.
Architects: Holabird and Roche with Louis Sullivan
1898, 1906.
The Gage Group of buildings were designed by Holabird and Roche
as a single steel structure with the intent to accommodate the needs
of three distinct millinery clients. The client for the Gage
Building hired Louis Sullivan to design the facade of the 18 S
Michigan building. The buildings are on the National Register
for Historic Buildings, listed as Chicago Landmarks, and are
beneficiaries of the Landmark Preservation Council of Illinois
Facade Easement Program.
Klein and Hoffman has designed and implemented a facade
restoration program of the buildings including extensive terra cotta
repair and replacement to match the original Louis Sullivan
ornamentation, brick repair and replacement to match the original
color and detailing, window repair and replacement, and aided the
Owner in the pursuit of numerous historic preservation tax incentive
programs. Completion for the Phase I of the terra cotta and
brick restoration is anticipated in 2005; completion for the windows
and storefront is anticipated in 2006.
Extensive research into the historical archives, public and
private institutions, and private collections have provided
architectural and ornamental information for the restoration of the
buildings.
